This article is a collaboration between Sarah Stephens, an American Hemp Farmer, CEO of Midwest Hemp Tech and Hempy's Heart, and Lauren Gibbs, the founder of Root for Hemp.

When we think about agricultural advancements and fighting climate change, massive, sweeping policies often come to mind. But in reality, one of the most powerful tools for change sits right in our hands.
Consumer demand has the power to proliferate hemp crops on American farms. When we choose hemp for our homes and our bodies, we aren't just buying a product—we are voting for a plant that rejuvenates our soil, restores our ecosystems and serves our communities.
Hemp grain and fiber products are here to help us, our homes, our animals, and our soil. And the best part? When you experience hemp firsthand, it’s incredibly easy to love. It isn’t just good for the planet; it performs beautifully in a variety of household uses.
If you’ve been wondering how to get up close and personal with hemp in your daily life, you don't have to look far. Everyday encounters with hemp start right at home, transforming your daily routines into small acts of environmental stewardship.
Seed to Salad in 7 Days: Growing Hemp Microgreens at Home
You don’t even need land to start growing hemp! In fact, you can start right on your kitchen counter with hemp microgreens and sprouts. They are incredibly fast-growing, vibrant and packed with a dense punch of nutrients that add a fresh, earthy crunch to any meal.
Sprouting hemp seeds enhances their digestibility and nutrient availability. The process activates enzymes that break down anti-nutrients, making it easier for your body to absorb vitamins and minerals. Studies show that sprouting increases the bioavailability of nutrients in seeds. For hemp seeds, sprouting enhances protein digestibility and increases antioxidant levels. This means your body can absorb more nutrients from sprouts compared to raw seeds.

You can use the sprouting jar method to have sprouts ready in 5-7 days, and with this method you can eat the roots, shoot, and first leaves. If you prefer to sow them with soil in a counter tray, they will be ready in 10-14 days, and you can snip them off at the base and eat the shoots and the first 2-6 true leaves per plant. For both methods, you are eating the plants so early in their life cycle that they will not produce any skunky odor or any THC.
A Drizzle of Omega Power for Every Meal
Keeping a bottle of cold-pressed hemp seed oil on hand is one of the easiest ways to elevate your health. Hemp seed oil is widely celebrated as one of nature’s most nutrient-dense secrets, and Hempy’s Heart Hemp Seed Oil brings you that power in its purest form. Cold-pressed from premium hemp grains grown right here in the USA, this oil contains absolutely zero fillers or additives. Because it is premium, food-grade quality, it is a plant-based, vegan, and non-GMO powerhouse packed full of essential omegas and linolenics that your body thrives on.
Drizzling hemp seed oil over your salads, blending it into morning smoothies or using it as a finishing oil on roasted vegetables adds essential omegas, vitamins and a delicious nutty flavor.
A Complete Plant Protein Powder
Hempy’s Heart Hemp Grain Protein Powder is made from 100% pure, whole-ground hemp seeds. Packing approximately 45% complete plant-based protein, it delivers a rich, nutty flavor along with an all-natural dose of fiber, copper, iron, and manganese. Even better? It’s completely gluten-free and proudly sourced from hardworking American farmers. Blend it in smoothies, sprinkle it on oatmeal, or bake it into cookies...the possibilities are endless!

The Soil Secret Your Houseplants Have Been Waiting For
Your green thumb will love hemp, too! Hemp hurd, the woody inner core of the hemp stalk, makes for an exceptional, sustainable mulch. By using hemp hurd as a top-dress on your indoor houseplants or outdoor patio pots and raised garden beds, you create a protective barrier that retains moisture in the soil, moderates temperature, and can even suppress fungus gnats. It keeps your plants thriving while reducing the need for frequent watering.

Hemp BioChar is a high-performance, sustainable soil amendment designed to transform your houseplant soil, garden soil, or farm from the ground up. Locally grown and charred in Kansas, this 100% hemp-based biochar features an exceptional 76% carbon content, providing a permanent structure for soil microbes to thrive. BioChar is also an excellent base in terrariums because it helps to purify the water, and an essential soil amendment for promoting the health of sensitive orchid roots.

About Sarah Stephens
Recognized for her expertise in agricultural hemp, Sarah was first licensed as a research producer with the Kansas Department of Agriculture in 2019. To support the crop’s scalability, she co-founded the Kansas Hemp Consortium, which has earned multiple SARE grants for in-field production research and best-practice guides.
Building on this momentum, Sarah co-founded Midwest Hemp Technology in Augusta, KS, where she serves as CEO. MHT purchases hemp from midwestern farmers to process fiber and grain for industrial and food uses—including their signature Hempy’s Heart brand products, featuring hemp seed oil, protein, hurd, and sprout seeds.
A two time graduate of Wichita State University, Sarah earned a master's degree from the Hugo Wall School of Urban and Public Affairs. Her career has always centered around service businesses and public affairs. In her first entrepreneurial venture at the age of 25, she founded Safe Riders Inc.--a chauffeur service that drove intoxicated people home in their own cars. By the time she sold the business 7 years later, the company had delivered more than 250,000 people, and their cars, home safely after a night out. From there, Sarah joined the corporate office for Freddy’s Frozen Custard as director of public affairs and real estate development.
Currently, she is a board member of the Kansas Cannabis Chamber of Commerce and Kansans for Hemp. Outside of the industry, she serves as an advisory board member to the Wichita YMCA and CPRF. Sarah and her husband are raising four teenagers in Wichita where she enjoys their sports, going for walks, yoga, bicycling and all things hemp!
