About Our Products
Why are Hemp textile products more expensive than other sustainable goods?
Why are Hemp textile products more expensive than other sustainable goods?
The current market for hemp raw materials is extremely limited. Until we are growing dramatically more hemp in the USA and have more USA-based processing plants converting hemp into its usable parts, the limited supply will continue to have a direct impact on costs. The forced error of 81 years of hemp prohibition in the USA means quite simply: we are behind the times. We believe that driving widespread consumer demand for hemp goods will help incentivise more domestic production, bringing down costs in the long run.
We have imported bulk quantities of hemp textiles from over 70 countries. Even with bulk discounts, hemp textiles cost us between $18-35 per yard. For reference, 100% cotton textiles are typically $4-10 per yard and bamboo textiles can range from $8-15 per yard.
Root for Hemp exclusives are sewn in the USA with 100% organic cotton thread, which is typically 4x the cost of standard cotton thread.
Why are tree-free hemp paper products more expensive than traditional paper products?
Why are tree-free hemp paper products more expensive than traditional paper products?
Our stationery products are made with premium quality Hemp Heritage® paper, comprised of 25% hemp and 75% post-consumer pulp. No dyes or bleaches are used and the natural color of the paper is complemented by tiny flecks representing the hemp fibers giving the paper an organic look. The paper is chlorine free, acid free and archival quality.
The historical hemp plant holds great promise as a renewable TREE-FREE source of fiber which can help stop the radical destruction of the earth’s remaining forests. The hemp paper is made in the USA at a mill powered by hydroelectric, saving millions of barrels of fossil fuels. All of our stationery products are printed by Greenfield Paper in San Diego, California, USA.
Are your products made in the USA?
Are your products made in the USA?
While we import our textiles from earth-conscious partners from around the world, everything we make with it is handcrafted by a collective of USA-based makers. We are doggedly committed to USA-based production, but after a generation of outsourcing, that is not easy or cheap. We pay all of our makers a living wage, not a minimum wage. Meet our Makers.
Current products that are crafted in the USA include: Greeting Cards, Notebooks, Napkins, Bandanas, Dish Towels, Hoodies, Pachamamas, and Coasters.
Some of our products are not made in the USA because the current market for domestic hemp makers is extremely limited. When sourcing products from outside the USA, we make sure to work with partners that share our goals around sustainability.
If you are a USA-based producer that would like help making and selling your wares with hemp, head over to our application page.
What makes hemp an ideal sustainable material?
What makes hemp an ideal sustainable material?
Because land restoration plays such a large role in the future of sustainable life on Earth, hemp has far too many benefits to ignore. Hemp can be farmed with regionally adapted landrace varieties that do not require fertilizer or pesticides. Hemp’s deep roots restore and stabilize the soil, capturing carbon along the way. Unlike cotton and bamboo, hemp is a water smart crop. Hemp is durable, sustainable, and compostable.
Why aren’t all of your products made out of hemp?
Why aren’t all of your products made out of hemp?
We dream of the day when we can make everything out of hemp. However, the hemp supply chain has a long way to go. Anything that we sell that is NOT made out of hemp is sustainably made with plant based, recycled, or metal materials. These items are in our Merch on a Mission line, which has a central theme – it must advance the cause of hemp in some way, and it must give back to the community most harmed by the racist War on Drugs. For every non-hemp product sold, $1 is donated to Last Prisoner Project.
How should I care for my hemp goods?
How should I care for my hemp goods?
Hemp textiles become both softer and stronger with every wash, and most items can be washed as you would wash cotton products. However, we strongly discourage the use of fabric softener or dryer sheets, which can hinder hemp’s natural antimicrobial properties. Iron on the cotton setting with steam for a smooth and polished finish.
Should your hemp products become damaged or reach the end of their life, they should never go to a landfill because hemp can be composted in your own backyard.
