Our Story

A solution we’ve had all along

Eco-minded folks know that more plant-based-everything is good for the planet. As bamboo and organic cotton are more popular than ever, it's high time we look at hemp as a big player in sustainable living

Because land restoration plays such a large role in the future of sustainable life on Earth, hemp has far too many benefits to ignore. Hemp can be farmed with regionally adapted landrace varieties that do not require fertilizer or pesticides. Hemp’s deep roots restore and stabilize the soil. Hemp is a water smart crop. Hemp is durable, sustainable, and compostable

Hemp has been in our hands for ~12,000 years, for good reason. Hemp’s magic is its versatility. At Root for Hemp, we use this ancient plant to make notebooks, greeting cards, napkins, bandanas, scrunchies, dish towels, art, and more. You can make just about anything from Hemp! Hemp can be made into home insulation, hardwood floorboards, and other building materials. Hemp can be used in countertops, upholstery, and furniture. Almost everything we are making out of plastic can be made out of Hemp. Hemp – no matter the format – is more sustainable than most raw materials. Hemp is poised to become the foundation of sustainable living for everything under your roof!

The Long Shadow of Prohibition

So why is it so hard to find hemp for everyday uses? The long shadow of prohibition looms today, and there's still a lack of education around the opportunity of hemp. Stigma persists. Only in the United States did we endure an 81 year prohibition of industrial hemp. Fueled by the racist War on Drugs, hemp production was lost to our economy for generations. Native knowledge and expertise in growing local hemp was lost, and a hemp farming culture never had a chance to thrive in the modern economy. Until now. Hemp was legalized nationwide in the 2018 Farm Bill, and we are truly at the dawn of a new era.

Rooted in Cultural History

Those who enjoy the psychoactive benefits of cannabis understand what it means to have a deeper relationship with the plant. Cannabis culture, no matter when or where it is, has always been rooted in community. For a long time you had to “know a guy” to get your hands on a stash. Prohibition created a whispered word of mouth culture around cannabis consumption. Nevertheless, potheads persisted. We always found each other.

We found a home base in Colorado with legalization in 2014. Read more about our Founder's journey at the dawn of legal weed. At its peak there were more dispensaries than Starbucks and Walgreens combined in the state. You can buy legal weed in most states now, and it's growing fast. We’ve come so far from making pot brownies at home, yet we still can't find a dish towel made of hemp? We know the cannabis plant is a wonder weed, so how could this still be?
