From my decade of growing female-only cannabis, I’ve come to expect August as “bud season”—that magical time when flowers start to form and the garden gets fragrant. But these hemp babes? Not so fast.
They were still in full veg mode—stretching tall, leafy, and strong—but showing no signs of gender expression. The only ladies around were the lady bugs. I called up my bud Sarah at Midwest Hemp Tech, who confirmed my suspicion: they were behind schedule. There was nothing to do but let them find their own rhythm.
By now, the plants were 3 to 4 feet tall and a little top-heavy. Out here near the foothills, that means one good gust of wind can take a few down. So, I gave them a helping hand—bamboo stakes and velcro plant ties, bundling a few together for strength. Turns out, hemp (like sunflowers) grows best shoulder-to-shoulder, literally supporting each other in the breeze.
It was my first time growing a mixed-gender field of hemp, and I was waiting with bated breath to see how things would develop in early September. Stay tuned for next week’s update—spoiler: the plot thickens.
