Chaotic Hemp Gardening, Part 2: Thirsty Teenagers

Chaotic Hemp Gardening, Part 2: Thirsty Teenagers

Lauren Gibbs |

By July, my little hemp seedlings had entered their awkward adolescent phase—fast growing, eager, and suddenly very thirsty. The dog days of Summer got hotter, the leaves reached 2-3 feet high, and for the first time, they actually needed me.

I started watering here and there—sometimes with the hose, sometimes by simply nudging my grass sprinkler closer to the beds to mimic rain (and let’s be honest, to make it part of my already lazy watering routine). Twenty minutes felt about right—give or take a gut feeling.

I took a little time to pluck off the leaves damaged by hail earlier this season, and those were discarded into my compost. This step was definitely not required, more like an opportunity for a doting mom to take a closer look.

I decided to scoop a few of the smaller plants out with a trowel and potted them up for closer observation in my greenhouse. It was fun to add some hemp vibes around the patio too, but I mainly wanted a few mobile hemp plants I could show off at my GoFarm pop-ups in August.

Turns out, even in July heat, these plants still had plenty of cool energy. Stay tuned for next week’s chapter—when things start to get tall, tangled, and a little wild.
