My first backyard hemp field wasn’t exactly a planned experiment—it started as more of a “why not?” moment. I wasn’t growing any veggies this year, and my soil was begging for some love. Then I remembered the gallon jar of hemp seed we bought from our buds at Midwest Hemp Tech.
With nothing to lose, I tossed a few handfuls into a 4x6 garden box, raked them in with my fingers, and called it good. No watering schedule. No spreadsheets. No science experiments—just a little chaos gardening at its finest.
Within about 7-10 days, the sprouts started coming… then coming… then really coming. Let’s just say the germination rate was, in scientific terms, HIGH.
For May and June, I didn’t water once. I simply watched these little overachievers do their thing—and to state the obvious, they grew like a weed.
It was pretty easy to take a "sow what?" approach. Stay tuned for next week’s installment, Part 2: Thirsty Teenagers, where things start to shift in July.
