Chaotic Hemp Gardening, Part 4: The Bachelor Party

Male Hemp Plant

Lauren Gibbs |

Heading into early Fall last year, I'd been letting these babes do their thing—no rush, no pressure—but I was definitely checking in regularly to see when they’d finally start showing some gender expression. I was hand watering about weekly at this point, and that gave me time to check in on their development. And then, finally, it happened.

Or so I thought.

At first, I spotted what looked like tight little green buds forming on a few tops. “Ah, the girls have arrived,” I thought. But as they developed, they were NOT characteristically fragrant and those tidy nodules started to stretch into clusters of—wait for it—pollen sacs! These weren’t ladies at all. They were pollen-filled boys!

And suddenly… the boys were everywhere. It was a bona fide Bachelor party in my little hemp plot!

I texted my go-to hemp guru at Sarah Stephens, CEO of Midwest Hemp Tech, who confirmed that an all-male field is pretty unusual. Luckily, with a little more patience, a few true females seemed to appear--but buds were so tiny, it was hard to be sure.

Pollination season was definitely behind schedule, but now imminent. I said a prayer to the notoriously volatile Colorado weather gods, hoping for more time in the Fall for this to play out.

Stay tuned for the installment, Part 5: Showgirl Season (Buzzing Bee Edition).
